multi touch interaction research

multi touch interaction research multi touch interaction research multi touch interaction research

“Since refining the FTIR (frustrated total internal reflection) sensing technique, we’ve been experimenting with a wide variety of application scenarios and interaction modalities that utilize multi-touch input information. These go far beyond the “poking” actions you get with a typical touchscreen, or the gross gesturing found in video-based interactive interfaces. It is a rich area for research, and we are extremely excited by its potential for advances in efficiency, usability, and intuitiveness. It’s also just so much fun!

it sure looks like it. the new ideas like the slingshot are awesome. let’s hope not everything here is going to be locked away in the corporate patent safe…

radial menus and fitts’s law

inspired by the nulooq, a little rant about radial (or sliced-cake) menus. (more…)

the nulooq input device

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

logitech's nulooq

the nulooq is a input device that is used in addition to a mouse or pen. the top operates similar to the ipod’s scroll/click-wheel while the base is more like a jog dial, used in video editing. the device was developed by logitech and works in conjunction with adobe creative suite 2: illustrator, photoshop and indesign. when interacting with the top part, a radial menu appears on screen displaying the software’s tools. the dial on the sides can be used to zoom or adjust sliders, like layer opacity for instance.
i haven’t tried it yet but it’s nice to see some innovation in this area, especially that adobe is involved: it feels like they have been sitting on their hands for the last 6 years turning creativity and innovation in for big business (like selling pdf to fortune 500 companies). their ageing interface implementations have been challenged by programs like apple’s motion and others that really take advantage of more modern operating systems’s features.
